PATRIOTS WIDE RECEIVER MATTHEW SLATER HONORED WITH 2017 BART STARR AWARD AT 30TH ANNUAL NFL-SANCTIONED SUPER BOWL BREAKFAST
Saturday, February 4, 2017 | 8:00am | Marriott Marquis Houston
Houston, TX (Feb. 4, 2017) –New England Patriots Wide Receiver Matthew Slater was honored with one of the sport’s most prestigious awards this morning, the Bart Starr Award.
The Patriot was chosen by his National Football League (NFL) peers as this year’s winner based on his character and contributions on and off the field. Tony Dungy presented the award in front of an audience of 1,600 at what is widely considered one of the game’s premier events, the Super Bowl Breakfast (presented by Athletes in Action and the Super Service Challenge).
“Honestly, this award probably means more to me than any other individual accolade I’ve ever received as far as what I’ve accomplished on the field,” said Slater. “Being acknowledged by my peers is extremely humbling.”
Matthew Slater’s father, Hall of Famer Jackie Slater was a former offensive lineman for the Los Angeles Rams and the 1996 Bart Starr Award winner, making this the first time a father and son have both earned the honor. Jackie Slater was also in attendance and received the trophy for Matthew who had to leave early due to a team meeting.
The Patriots drafted Matthew Slater in 2008. For the past six seasons, his teammates have elected him captain of special teams where his stellar performance has named him to the Pro Bowl each year.
Slater gives his time, leadership and presence to a wide range of worthy causes. He is highly involved in the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation, partnering with many organizations such as Play 60, Make-A-Wish, and Read Between the Lines. This past October, Slater recruited some of his fellow Patriots to attend his “Matthew vs. Matthew” charity event - a dinner and raffle to benefit Samaritan’s Purse in their relief efforts following Hurricane Matthew.
Slater also received the Ron Burton Community Service Award in 2016 for his dedication to the community of New England.
Along with his father, Matthew Slater joins the list of Bart Starr Award winners that includes Thomas Davis, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Jason Witten and Reggie White.

The NFL-sanctioned Athletes in Action Super Bowl Breakfast has taken place in the Super Bowl host city every year since 1988, drawing sellout crowds to hear from some of sport’s biggest names. The Bart Starr Award, presented at the breakfast, honors Starr’s lifelong commitment to serving as a positive role model to his family, teammates and community. The winner of the Bart Starr Award is determined by NFL-player balloting at the end of the regular season, making it one of only two individual honors selected by the players themselves.
